I want to wash the mainsheet this winter. It's a 4/8 to 1 tackle with an endless line with a very neat long splice. I am thinking of cutting the splice to separate the line from the blocks for easier washing.
When I restore the tackle, will I lose anything much if I don't redo the splice, instead putting stoppers in the two ends and leaving a couple of metre long tails on each end? In use over the last 2 years, the splice has always stayed well away from the blocks without me paying much attention to balancing the pull on each side.
I don't reckon I could do justice to the splice.
