Dodgy Asus eee pc WARNING

I've seen mention of Asus eee pc notebooks for use onboard. Just a warning that the 900 model has an 'undocumented feature' of discharging the Lion battery whilst it is switched off. The battery will be completely discharged in a couple of days of non use. I spoke to Asus about this and they said it was a motherboard 'design fault'.
My recommendation is avoid this model completely as there tech support will ask you to return the machine to them for a motherboard repair. This may take 28 days.

Otherwise, it looked quite an attractive solution for onboard use.
 
Not really a solution is it!
How many times can you do this before the thing falls apart ?

If you are happy to buy this poor quality engineering then you promote bad practice.

The warning is for people that don't want to waste their money on something that doesn't do the job.

Do you work for Asus by the way ?

Couldn't agree more - mine - the keyboard half packed up within a week and the LINUX OS doesn't allow proper downloading anything from the interweb. Got and Advent 4211 instead - a little more costly but a million times better.
 
Hmmmm. I was going to buy one of those eee pc's but instead bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 from Tesco and a Dell 12v converter direct from Dell. So far nothing short of excellent.
 
Asus is one of the most respected makes in the world of both pc components and PC´s. Noone in their right mind goes for linux, even ASUS says ithe linux version is aimed at children and totally inexperienced users.
28 days to fix a problem, no worries.
AT least it can be fixed, I am sure your dell or whatever would take just as long and they are not without issues either.
To post a misleading item as to ´quality´is not in anybodys interests.
Linux is a joke unless you are into network security / hacking, or just a plain old drug infested 60´s reject hippy /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Second the Dell Inspiron 1525 , runs seapro and AIS. Just wondering if things go wrong at sea how they will do the next day on site repair?
 
According to the forum quoted, the design problem CANNOT be fixed without serious rework of a multilayer PCB and in fact NOBODY has had a pc returned that has been repaired.
The 'return to ASUS' for motherboard repair is a total farce, they don't have any intention of effecting a repair.

Trading standards are on the case, lets wait and see what happens.

As far as the comments about Linux are concerned, the applications that are supplied with the Asus eee are usable, however you have a choice. You can install Windows if you like, or alternatively you can source a much better version of Linux from many other sources.

As for a non starter repair, well, try n send it back...

Intel made a cockup with the early Pentium...
AMD with VIA Chipsets etc.
So what. Its a great product at a great price.
Send it back, wait the 28 days, then complain if you must.
You pay the price for a PDA and get a usable PC. Some folks are never happy. get real. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The initial post was to warn unsuspecting potential customers about this "battery drain feature"

Asus don't want to deal with it.

Now its your choice, you can buy it if you want, but at least you now know about it.
Seems crazy to me to buy a crippled notebook with known issues when there are other better models available at less money that work properly.
 
I bought an Asus Eee 1000 with XP a few weeks ago. I reformatted the HD and put XP Pro and MS Office on it.
Its one of the nicest notebooks I have used, light and portable and while not the most pwerful machine its just the job for what I wanted it for. Battery life is astonishing and I get about 5 hours or so
The only downside for me is that it does have a PC card slot and I use one of ther Vodaphone 3G PC Express cards, 5 minutes on eBay got me a USB - PC card adapter that cost about £10 delivered from Hong Kong and that works just fine
