Just incase anyone gets done, there is a guy keeps popping up on EBAY offering a RL70CRC and raymarine value pack, it is a con, (currently item no:4549037178). He has been reported for about the 6th time to my knowledge, each time he has a different user ID but is not sharp enough to change the advert layout!

Leave it with me - I'll sort the b$stard. This is the same guy as about 3 weeks ago. He's changed his email address very slightly.

Update: I've contacted e-bay security. I think he has scammed a genuine e-bayer's id. Look at the real person's feedback; it's all in German and what he has sold in the past is all in €'s. Our fake guy is describing in English and selling in £'s. He has hit on a genuine seller who doesn't sell that often and hopes the real guy doesn't spot it. (I've contacted the genuine e-bayer via e-bay forum and we'll see what he has to say)

yup he has reappeared at least 6 times recently, it is dodgey as in it does not exsist, I know a couple of people that almost fell for it. I e-mailed one of his addresses guessing it was a scam and his reply confirmed it.

As I only pop onto Ebay now and again these are quite hard to spot IMHO.

Yes if the offer is too good to be true I guess alarms should ring.

Will someone spell out, what are the real tell tales?

I don't do a lot of buying, but I always check sellers history - positive feedback rating, number of ratings, and Items sold previously - you can generally build a picture with this info - my rules are; min 10 ratings and the past 2 months ratings should be positive. I also have a paypal account (easy to set up) and look for sellers with the pp sign - Paypal protection - beleive this scam seller requests Western Union Money transfer - big no-no imho

should have done this the other way round - just looked at the EBAY Raymarine item - looking at this sellers profile - all looks perfect, so warning to myself also!

not normal though to give paypal email address - whether or not I wouldve spotted that though! - he's getting sneaky.......

I'm not going to spell out here all the tell-tales (sic) as to how you can spot the likely fraudster.
BUT

Current high bidder (tuppy2005) has a zero rating. From the way the scammer has acted in the past I think this is him bidding under another e-bay name. Tuppy2005 has been registered with ebay since February 2005 but has not bought or sold anything. Whilst not conclusive this is suspicious in it's own right.

If e-bay don't pull it then I will screw the ar$ehole in the last few minutes of bidding

How can you:

"If e-bay don't pull it then I will screw the ar$ehole in the last few minutes of bidding"

I saw a similar thing with a Chart-plotter that I bid on and lost but was contacted by the seller on "second chance" I was suspicious of the sellers profile and the fact that the winning bidder had already left feedback within a day of winning! The post office isn't that fast!

I reported it and declined the offer. I also emailed the rest of the loosing bidders, they had also been offered the unit.

How do I know this is the fraudster?

The descriptive content is exactly the same as used previously.

The previous auction "winner" had had her ebay ID scammed. The scammer played this wildcard as the auction price wasn't high enough for him. In my contact with her after the auction she said she knew someone was using her ID but didn't know how. Her ebay detail said she was in the UK but she was actually in Canada.

He has skimmed a genuine e-bayers ID for this auction. Check out the genuine guy's feedback. He only sells in Germany, advertises in German, sells in €'s and all the feedback is in German. Our scammer is advertising in English, selling worldwide and in £'s.

The scammers email contact is almost the same as his previous scams but in this case he has moved from yahoo to AOL.

Look at his answers to the questions posed. A genuine seller would be more positive in saying "No -despatch only but please note shipping is free" or something like "Yes pickup can be arranged from an agreed location in Munster".

The scammer is foreign with only basic English. In the description he's quoting the value of the item in $'s and he's not emphasing under Postage and Payment that he will ship free.

I could go on but I've been invited out for a beer /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

What makes you think that Tuppy2005 is sus? It may be that Tuppy is a reader on this forum and has put in a rather high proxy bid to prevent somebody being stung???

What other evidence do you need?

The information is all there if you just know where to look

I don't agree, all this means is that tuppy2005 has been stitched up in the past and left negative feedback for another scammer, who if you look at their feedback deserved it.

I said re tuppy

"Whilst not conclusive this is suspicious in it's own right."

I also said

"may be or it may not be" - SO I WAS NOT CONFIRMING ONE WAY OR THE OTHER and just indicating that it was worthy on note.

"I await a response to the email I sent to tuppy this am" -nothing heard so draw your own conclusions.

The outcome was that this was a scammer and the auction pulled - I can send you the email from EBay by PM if you want it
