You'll get fined if they do ask for them and you can't produce the originals.

the leader of the gang who turned me over in boulogne insisted in replying in english to my attemps at french!

p.s. one douanier read out 'this does not consitute proof of ownership' on my ssr certificate but when i told him it was on board he didn't insist.

I was asked to produce my passport in France (I shouldn't have laughed when a customs boat hit the pontoon next to me!). Unfortunately I had taken my wife's passport by mistake, but luckily they didn't seem to notice I wasn't a woman with long blonde hair!.

I've also been advised that an ICC is recommended, but could never get a definitive answer as to whether it was compulsory. Since I'll be visiting a few places coming back from Les Sables, I decided to get one anyway. Oh and insurance and a VHF license, assuming you have VHF.

I believe that you don't need a "Q" flag for France but if you visit the Channel Islands you do, and there are customs procedures there.

The French is simply 'curtesy'. Though would certainly advise it.

Agree though they're pretty zealous in St Vaast. Had to come to the aid of an English boat that could't find it's passports. French (very slightly) better than there's.
