Easier in most navigational aspects, cos no tides or fog, and deep water. More difficult in most logistical aspects, cos of travel there, lack of visitor berths, and language problems. Mixed bag in terms of weather, warmer of course, and less windy in some areas, but the winds pick up quicker and are less predictable.
Having just moved Buster to the Med in Sept-08 and having completed only about 350NM there(SCM/Pollenca/Alcudia/Soller/SCM) - It all seems fine to me at the mo!
Travelling so far has been very cheap and easy to arrange and although the pound is weak, reduced berthing costs at Sant Carles has certainly made up for it.
I have travelled out every month so far and have met other Brits that have been there since May who all love it there.
Been surprised how many times the weather and sea conditions, even in Dec/Jan, were favourable for a trip out. I spent many weekends in both Brighton and Torquay in summer just sitting on the boat!
Strangely, the only thing that I miss is the UK Coastguard, they do such an excellent job of work!
Really looking forward to this summer!

Boating in the Mediterranean is easer than boating in the UK.

You raise all these questions but never give us YOUR opinions on the questions you ask! It is as if you lob in a question and then run waiting for the explosion!
Go on Julie... tell us what you think next time you ask a question like this. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Yes, and the water isn't always deep, and there are tides, but relative to the UK they are far less significant factors. When you cross the channel, you encounter fog about half the time, i've yet to see any fog in 2 yrs in SoF, but I don't dispute it happens
Suppose I should have said "less", rather than "no".
Well on the SOF I dont know but the ballearics and coast of catalunya we get a lot of fog, in Spring and autumn, in Tunisia, lots of fog and sandstorms, Sardinia, fog, high winds, sandstorms, until it rains as well and then mud! Scicily fog and high winds, plus un-predictable weather patterns for a lot of the year. Add to that the sometimes very strong swells around coasts etc etc. But apart from that I guess its easy.
Trust you Paul.

The reason for the question.
The question about chartering in the med , got me thinking, it is perceived that it is easier boating down in the Med due to lack of the strength of tides we have here. Is this why insurance company's don't like bare boat charter in the UK. I think there may be boats out there that peeps would bare boat charter but don't because of the insurance.
Now I have done very little boating in the med [ my apron string is not long enough]but loads around UK, and France, so I asked the question to see what peeps thought. And to try and find out though them if things are very different, apart from the sun shining and stern too mooring.
Is That better. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
The UK has lots of fog in spring, autumn, summer and winter, I didn't think the med got nearly as much, maybe you know better. Thanks for the info on the other places, as I said some places are less windy, some aren't, but generally it's more unpredictable. I don't recall saying it was easy?

Sorry! Didn't mean to be a pain but I was sure there was something interesting behind the question... as I suspect there always is... but just asking the question without given us a little insight behind what inspired it not only isn't very interesting but it gives us no clues as to what kind of answer you are looking for.

HUGELY!
It is good to hear your views... they are always worth listening to so PLEASE don't keep them to yourself /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The RYA think it's easier in the Med .. if not why would they differentiate between tidal and otherwise ?
SoF does seem to get less sea fog than say Golfe du Lion, possibly 'cos the Mistrals are really ripping along when they get here ! No idea why in other words
Lack of tides is obviously easier though we are far enough west to be effected.
Fog yes you do get it on the costa del sol , but not until august, the hottest month.
winds , where we are usually either east or west not much in between, west is best as off the land. In summer late afternnoon winds can pick up due to heat radiation of the land.
