Do you think that we've hit the limit of the Walker Bay

Its been a while since I've posted a pointless blog like this so here we go again - If you dont like the thread - skip it and read something else.

Most of you will know that our dinghy is a Walker Bay fitted with a 40HP Yamaha.

At the time I bought it, I was concerned that I'd done the wrong thing but since then, its been used it for a number of different uses. There have been some successes and some failures so I thought I'd share my findings with you.

It would be interesting to hear what jfm has to say as he has exactly the same dinghy.

Just after I'd bought it, I towed it to Swanwick to get Princess to make the adjustmants to chocks etc and to fit it to Jennywren. I left them with the dinghy on the trailer and returned later - the comment from the engineer who fitted it was that "this little boat doesnt like the water - it always seems to be trying to get out!!".

For those of you who havent seen it, this is what I'm talking about.

Last season, before we moved the boat to the Med we met up with some forumites in Whitecliffe Bay

Here's the dinghy being driven by some reprobrates infront of a well known forum boat.

So, now you all know what we are talking about I'll continue with my experiences.

As a general purpose dinghy, we often use it round the marina - its a great "run about" - to pop over to the boatyard and back amongst other things.

IMG_0676Medium.jpg

And then several trips out to the Xiringuito Restaurant (on stilts) - out in the Lagoon at Sant Carles. ( see here www.xiringuitodelacosta.com ) Thats nearly two miles each way. It just "pops" onto the plane and you throttle back - probably around 25/30 knots.

We've even been known to transfer the old dog before we lost him earlier this year at the ripe old age of 17. He never really liked the water.

Normally, the dinghy is stored up on the flybridge so most of the time we forget that its there.

So now to my dissapointments.

Jennywren has recently had a new neighbour at Sant Carles.
A Sunseeker Predator 52 named Warlock

IMGP1620Medium.jpg

You cant see it in the above picture but she has one of the new 4 stroke Avon JetRibs on her bathing platform.

A few weeks ago, we were rafted up together out in the lagoon.

So, I did a bit of a silly thing - I challenged them to a race.
Some readers of this forum may have remembered a challenge and gauntlets that were thrown down at the end of the summer last year.
It was to be a virtual challenge between my Walker Bay and jfm's 4 stroke JetRib but we didnt get good enough weather conditions during the summer in the UK and then later the time was taken up by JennyWren's delivery to the Med. So we never got round to the actual race.

With this in mind - I challenged Nick and Teresa (Warlock's owners) to a proper side by side race.

DSC_0439Medium.jpg

I have to explain that the conditions weren't in my favour - a good force 5 and not exactly a flat sea but I have to admit - the JetRib absolutely slaughtered me. I thought it might be a guy thing so I challenged Teresa as well and again - I was anialated.

I think that it might have been its light construction but it just didnt run comfortably in the conditions - so maybe next time Nick.

So a first failure for the Walker Bay

An so to the next failure.
In ordering a boat with such a power to weight ratio, I thought that it might be the answer to towing a toy that I bought a few years ago. "The Manta Ray". This is a 12 foot wide inflatable that is suposed to fly when it reaches 20 knots. The last time we used it was in Studland and Swanage behind our old 2 stroke JetRib which didnt really have enough grunt to get the Manta airborne.

As I said above, I havent done a long post like this for a while but I always think that "a picture speaks a thousand words" so a video clip must "speak ten thousand words"

Have a look for yourselves then - tell me if this is a failure or not.
Perhaps we could have done with a bit more speed - what do you think.

Click the pics to play the video clips.

Well, after that I was getting a bit despondant so we packed up the Manta and got the skis out.

DSC00795Medium.jpg

Ah yes - thats better

And so here's a couple more video clips showing just how much fun it can be.

During our trip to SIBS this year we bought a couple more inflatables and I think that we will have a go at wakeboarding next year as well.

Please excuse the skiing style - we are really only novices.

Maybe it isnt as fast as the JetRib but remember that this little Walker Bay Dinghy is a fraction of the cost of the JetRib.
It should be much easier to maintain in the future and being of a conventional Rib/Outboard design, iI believe it's more manouverable.

So, maybe I did the right thing after all.

What do you think?

Well, it all looks like you're having plenty of fun with it.

The picture of Nick(?) stood on top of Warlock in the marina is simply stunning in a kinda man-defying-nature sort of way.

Good fun post Mike. Didn't we have a sweep stake of sorts on the top speed of each, I don't think there was ever any doubt the jet rib would be quite a lot faster, it was just a case of by how much. I seem to remember being quite confident in my guestimates, so would be interesting to know the stats.

I clocked my Zodiac 3.4m (75 kgs) with 30hp Honda (same again) on a handheld GPS, flat water with no tide, at a slightly dissapointing 33 mph.

Can anyone find the old thread with the guesses on, i'm not really very good with the search function, even the new one that apparently works?

Yep I sent this pic a few weeks ago to djefabs from this forum and asked him for a caption.

IMGP1620Medium.jpg

Knowing Nick, djefabs thought that 'Nick keeps forgetting he doesn't have a flybridge boat anymore' might be an appropriate caption.

I have heard that actually that isnt true -
Nick has kept the old flybridge and is back in the Solent until his next trip out to Warlock.

But maybe we can sort of "wind him up a little".

Hey thank you,
I believe we all like to see pictures while we use our toy's in real live,
and can enjoy them !

also good to see some faces of forum mates every now and then, :-)

I like the HP to size ratio !!
A littke bit oversized engines don't hurt if you are carefull with them !
IMO you made a good choice OB versus jetRib,
at least its a real boat :-)

as far as I know, you can't expect a small lightweight OB rib like that, to go faster then 35kn (?)
and would you need that ?

just one small remark,
Jenny Wren can hold a slightly bigger dingy on the flybridge
you seem to sit a little bit "crumped" in the dingy,
but as long it is just the two of you its OK I agree, but when you have guests ?
I know that a bigger dingy has other disadvantages

well done !

Its all down to HP is'nt it?

Just had the same discussion with a chum who wants the Williams.

Frankly speaking I would always take the boat and O/B option for the reasons you state.

However there is no doubt the jetboats do look the biz and fly too! Long term reliability maybe an issue and I would always be concerned of intake blocking where i would use the beast.

Actually, the photo doesnt do it justice.
There's plenty of room for 4 adults - even fat gits like me.
Space wasnt my dissapointment.

I would really have liked it to have pulled the Manta out of the water though.

Having said that, we've just bought a couple of more conventional ringo thingies which I think will be fun so maybe we will put the Manta on the top shelf.

Probably just as well if the Manta had actually flown, we could well have been visiting the local hospital (again!!!)

agree !

two years ago at Dusseldorf boatshow I saw a similar flying toy,
last year I went there to buy it, but it was taken from the market due to a deadly accident!!!

it's meand to be fun, no stress ;)

yes probably agree about the size of the dingy,
we put 4 peeps in a 2.4m dingy, thats fun but also stress :)

We will be trying out the new toys too this weekend behind the jetski, with any luck we might get to ski too!!!We will let you know how it goes. I'm not too sure my style will be any better!

Great post love the pictures,Looks like a great toy! do you have any more pictures form Sant Carles im moving my boat down to the MDL marina there on the 7th of october :)

How strong is the thingie? If you think it can withstand some really serious speed, I'd be interested to purchase it.
If you really don't want to use it anymore, of course.

It already has a small air leak in one of the less important sections - it probably wouldnt manage the transport - bit heavy as well - the only reason its in Spain is because we transported it in the crews quarters - BTW thats before we kept crew members in there!!!

Aha, I see. Thanks anyway.
Would have been fun to see if it could get some air at 50 kts or so, but I guess it would have been a bit risky as well!
Btw, were you at WOT in the clip with the manta?
Because if yes, I swear that the WB must go faster than that, even considering the towing.
At first glance, a bit of trim out is necessary.
And maybe also a tad more aggressive X dimension...

PS: otoh, the waterski speed looks a tad too high imho. You might want 26 to 28 kts for mono (31 being the slalom tournament speed), but 18 to 20 is more than enough for two skis.

Just a selection.

When you get to SC have a chat with Phil on a Moody called Moto - he will introduce you to everyone.

Its a really friendly place - everyone gets on well - raggies and stinkies alike.

Every Sunday evening its "Brits" night in the bar - 20% off the prices as well.

BTW the bar has become a great meeting place - I thought that the bertholders lounge would be the place where people meet but in fact its the main bar where we all get together.

Sorry I cant be there to meet you - maybe some other time.

FenderGirl

Does that mean you will be down our way this weekend?
If so - would you like some moral support.

BTW - I like the link in your signature.
Maybe you should make more people on this forum aware of what you are doing.
After all, its all in a good cause.
Well done for entering
SWMBO and I will add something tomorrow.
