Awkward, 2 screwdrivers, 1 each side and gently ease it out being careful not to damage the face of the pump housing.

I don't like leaving jobs half done so when you pull it out also fit the new one. Because the rubber vanes can 'set' then do it in the spring when commissioning. Pulling devices depend on the size of the pump. With smaller ones use two screwdrivers with loads of insulating tape wrapped around to stop scoring of the machined face. For larger ones you can grab them with a large grip (I've looked in the Screwfix catalogue and they are called Waterpump Pliers)
I do mine every couple of years

When I refit mine I put a smear of washing up liquid in the housing to ease the dry running period on initial start up. Another tip is to drop a "set" impellar into hot boiling water. If your lucky it'll regain its original shape. I've done it to a couple with no ill effects.

Yeah! I know its running rough, but your lucky its running at all!!

I pull it before the winter, give the inside of the pump housing a good smear of teflon grease, and chuck the propeller away.

I install a new, greased one at the start of the season. It's just on of these items that aren't worth saving on.

You throw away the propellor! Shit thats expensive maintenace. Me I pull the impellors when I change the oils at the end of the season, but as I stay in comission all year, I put the new ones in with a bit of grease and then run my engines for an hour every week. not on the weekends, when other folk are about. I keep last years impellors, as spares, if they are good, then throw them away the following year, if that makes sense??

What you do is, take the cover off, good squirt of wd40 in the pump, turn the engine over and the impeller will pop out, easy see.

To replace, put cable tie round the vanes about a 1/3 of the way along and pull tight to squish/squash all vanes down a bit, good squirt of wd and pop it back in, once the spline has started, snipe cable tie and shvoe it in the rest of the way.

Never re-use em.

Change em every year.
