I am in the process of fitting a Mikuni diesel heater and wondered whether it is necessary to fit an inline fuel filter. The fitting manual dosn't show one and one wasn't supplied with the kit. I do have the parts to do it but maybe if I fit one it will only be something else to go wrong. Any thoughts.

I took my Eberspacher supply from downstream of the engine primary filter. I'm not aware of any other filter for the unit, unless there's one inside somewhere. It has run perfectly for many years, so I don't seem to have caused it any major problems.

You do need a clean filtered supply of diesel, connect to the outlet of the main engine fuel filter outlet via the auxiliary outlet ports on the filter body or a T piece.
There will be people along soon to tell you that the heater shouldn't be piped off the main filter, put another filter on if you must.

Just for info: Small 'thimble' filter inside the inlet to the 'tick-tick' pump - and I mean small!

Eberspacher are quite specific about the fuel to the thing, they provide a page in the manual with drawings showing how to fit the intake. The tick tick pumps are very sensitive to the length of the suction line, i.e, sensitive to obstruction in the suction line, (this from the techie that showed me how to fit my first. I am confident that the Mikuni will be similar. If they dont provide a filter in the kit, if they dont mention it in the instructions, why put one in?

PS
I followed the instructions when fitting my first D1LC and fitted a stack pipe in the tank, no filter, just the minute one that comes as std in the inlet of the tick tick pump

I did the same thing when I fitted my Erber. I have a CAV main filter between the tank and engine (was Yanmar 2GM20 now 3YM20). I used the "spare" outlet on the CAV filter to pipe the erber supply. My erber also came with a small in-line filter ~ over the years I've changed the CAV filter but never the erber one?

Never had any fuel problems?

I have contacted Mikuni who suggest fitting one if I have one. Interestingly they advise fitting before the pump and didn't seem bothered about it being plastic, as it was not being used on inland waterways. Presumably it would fail the boat inspection scheme if it was. Thanks to all.
