I was out on my rib helping my daughter to take soundings of the local river for her GCSE geography project. As I was motoring through the channel from estuary to sea, with clipboard in hand to record data, I was surprised at the attention the yacht in front was giving me. Every few seconds the helm would look round to check my progress. This was odd, since yachtsmen do not normally have any interest in small ribs. I was even more surprised that he started shouting at me as I drew alongside. Eventually I got close enough to hear: "I had to leave early. I was hoping I would see you before I left. I didn't intend to avoid paying. How much are the mooring fees?"
He was relieved when I explained that I was not the harbour master and not chasing him to recover money. It has made me think that loitering in the channel early in the morning in a rib might be a nice littler earner.
