Do you do cruising in company?

We're relatively new to boating (3 years) and have so far just gone up and down the coast from Plymouth as far as Fowey in the west and Torquay to the east. One of the things that attracted me to our marina was the Cruising in Company mentioned in the blurb about being an RYA Active Marina, and the training days etc that are mentioned. However at our particular marina there has been nothing active since 2012 which is disappointing.

I joined the Ancasta cruising club but their trips start in the Solent. I'm thinking we'll just carry on doing our own thing this year around our area and maybe move further East next year. We picked up info about several marinas at the boat show last year and they are all much more expensive than ours so I want to make sure we find one that ticks the boxes re social and cruising opportunities.

On a more serious note ( some people on hear have zero sense of humour) if I was in your position I would definitely organise my own rally / club, you could easily muster support I am sure, and it would not have to be set up on the basis that you are taking any responsibility for others , just like minded people meeting up and doing something as a group,

Organising a rally sounds like a different game to travelling in company with a small group of friends .

It is important to have one or two ground rules as well to ensure that cruises go to plan, or as close to plan as is humanly possible!

We always ensure that all of the boats are well maintained and serviced.

And the only other "rule" is if you decide to turn back due to crew problems you are on your own. If you have mechanical problems and have to turn back, at least one boat will head back with you and ensure you get "home" safely.

I love the social side of cruising in company beit an organised one or just a group of friends but equally I love just going off on our own or having the odd 'girly' weekend jaunt. For me, whatever we do, boating is the best thing we ever got into (cost aside of course!).

I did a trip East back in Jan of this year to look at a few marinas re a plan that we have to move out boat there this year. All three made a point of saying that they had berth holders that ran " cruising clubs" , it's not my thing so it did not really register, but I fully understand why some may seem interested in this, feel free to PM me and I will provide you with further details etc

I would also be a bit fed up if my marina advertised itself as one of the RYA active marinas but wasn't! I would ask the RYA why they still have this badge of honour with no events to show for it for 3-4 yrs.

I also love cruising in company for the social side and am lucky as my boat is at Haslar marina which is also an Active Marina, but deservedly so as it's a really active one! The haslar yacht club, based at the marina put on numerous rallies/events/training sessions and they are very well attended. The great thing is there is no distinction between raggies and mobos with both attending the rallies equally and we all mix very happily.....unlike the Lounge here....:)

There is a club at our marina. They do a daft thing - an Easter Cruise . Last weekend it had to be abandoned. A good thing they did .
Usually there is one crisis or another.
I am not a member of the club. They almost always become a dictatorship rather than a club.
