Do you believe ‘him?????

Last Saturday I had an accident... I was driving our 34’ Rescue boat…. I went out to get her by myself ( which I normally do ,if conditions are right) I had no problem maneuvering her out of the pen ( 2 x 175 hp Cummins ) came alongside the Pier ( saves the race officers a 0.5 mile walk).. BUT with both controls in neutral, I went outside to supervise the lines being made secure…. Then one gear “kicked in” which meant I was moving forward.. knowing I had our BRAND NEW chase boat in front of me , I rushed inside to switch off the motors ( both for and aft lines were now secured) .. In doing so I bashed my head, blood everywhere… 1 hour later 4 x stitches in my skull….

On Wednesday last, I went out to examine the rescue boat, and see if there was any skin on the frames, that I could take to my Doc to have him sew back on.

At the security gate, there was a couple looking lovingly at the yachts, we got talking.. He claimed he sailed from New York to New Zealand in a Morgan 40 WITHOUT charts… just an Encyclopedia Britannica world map.

On Sunday last, being confined to “quarters” I planned a route on the charts on my PC, from Panama to NZ... Also, I have sailed in the South Pacific. I know from first hand experience that there are some pretty tricky passages as indeed, getting through narrow gaps in a reef calls for a lot of information to study first.

After my conversation with the Yank. I believed him, then came home and began to question if it could be done.. I certainly would not try it, but I am a belt and braces person anyway…

Do you believe him … would you do that route without charts????
