Are we as a society obsessed we staying fresh and clean all the time ?

Although marinas are nice to visit occasionally, some friends and shipmates MUST get to a place with showers, hair dryers etc EVERY night when cruising - and that's just the blokes !

Many years ago, as a younger man, we owned a small (17 ft) sailing vessel with two bunks, a sea toilet, a spirit stove, and a very small sink. Not showering or even washing didn't seem to bother us. Now I'm the leeward side of fifty, and 'er indoors getting towards it, we do enjoy our creature comforts - hence a nice big boat (40 + ft) with two bathrooms and plenty of running hot water !
Its also nice to be able to wear reasonable clothes without them getting all creased and grubby.
I've been there! Don't need it anymore!!

Well, with the price of marina's, if we are in one, us 4 (2adults 2kids) have a shower morning and evening, just to get our money's worth.

My philosophy has always been (for the last 40 years anyway) that if nobody washes nobody notices the smell! It has worked quite well on a trans Indian Ocean passage and up the Red Sea and in the Med. No marinas there, either!

The smell of a true yachtsman

It is very handy when the water you sail in is unsalted!
On the fresh-watered Onego-lake in Russia where I sail, anyone of my crew who wants or needs washing (smells too ugly) can do it any time through the jorney, just stepping on the stern-staircase into the water with some soap taken with, though the water may be a bit cold (15 degrees) and it is all too soft, so the washing process may be long enough!
Safety belt is always worn in such cases :)))...

Maybe it should be the 'Pongs' rather than the 'Poms'?

We just had an English friend stay on a yacht with us for a few days, quite apart from the fact that handwashing after head trips seemed to be optional (No that's alright I can cut up the chicken myself thanks!) bathing every day seemed optional as well. Strange really because it was 35 C most days!! After the first two days I made sure we went swimming everyday!

Re: Only dirty people wash.

Mr. Jack Tar,
You responded with exactly the same posting to one of my posts some time a go. Other than you, the only person I've heard utter that phrase was from a Sandy McPherson, who lived in a tiny croft near Sandwood Bay, on the Atlantic coast of Sutherland (called Highland now), Scotland.

Any relation?

My son stated yesterday afternoon when I said, when did you shower ?
I thought he had on Friday
Dad if I'd washed Friday then I would have needed to wash again now

Thats pure logic from a teenager .

The British sailor is into \'Male Musk\' ......

Yes when we are as dirty as a Frenchman we do have a bath. A really good one about antifoul time, another mid season and one more before the club dance.

I have started to have a few more because our 'musk' drives the women mad. Keep getting touched up by them all the bloody time !

Unfortunately you dingbats never give the old 'juice' enough time to build up.

Is that why we get so many Sheilas over here ?

That reminds me of an Aussi friend's saying when he was thirsty{mostly always]
"Jeez, my throats as dry as a Poms towel"
Having bred and trained him as decent crew my son has now buggered off to somewhere called Brisbane.I didn't know it was possible to sail there.I hope he doesn't pick up any bad habits.

I never thought that famous Australian representative, Sir Les Patterson, looked particularly savoury.
