Im in the motor trade and run a Renault dealership (best deals on all New cars, likewise on all used cars all makes supplied. shameful plug) if a car is bought new and the warranty expires and something goes wrong that shouldnt, Renault will pay goodwill up 100% of the total cost of repair up to 2 yrs after the expiry of the warranty, do Volvo have such a policy do you think or is it a case of sorry mate warranty expired tough luck.

Re: Renault goodwill? Pah!

It's all very well making goodwill gestures, but how the hell do you get a Renault dealer to actually look at your car some time within the next four weeks? It's not like they're reliable vehicles that never need to be fixed, or anything like that. Sadly, most goodwill has evaporated weeks before the thing finally makes it to the dealer's.

I've got a (non boaty) question for you...how do you open the bonnet on an Espace when the bonnet release cable has snapped near the bonnet end of the cable? Top options so far include breaking open the bonnet (£600) or breaking one of the headlights (£90). Or taking out the dashboard.

Hmm. You could leave it in the driveway: mine spontaneously burst into flames that way, and hence claimed on insurance, and serve me right for trying to avoid buying the same stupid car as stupid Tblair except his ain't a 2.8....

Re: Renault goodwill? Pah!

Nope...I tried, the AA man tried, the local French car "specialist" tried. Local Renault dealer can't look at it for "at least another three weeks". So bust the headlight and got to it that way. Have concluded that the entire car was built around the bonnet-release cable. All I have to do now is sort out why the aircon doesn't work properly, why it won't start three times out of five, and fix the rattles and bits that have fallen off.

Maybe TCM's right...leave it in the drive and hope that it mysteriously catches fire.

VW goodwill

Was the incendiary car an Espace or the Galaxy? Our Galaxy (Sharan axshully) also self ignited. It was an early model, a 2.8, bought 1996 just when the model was launched.

Fault was wiring, the harness chafed on the floorpan under the carpet. It took the dealer 100hours to find it because the short circuiting that resulted only happened very intermittently, over bumps (they had been looking before the flames incident, because fuses kept popping). It was out of warranty, 2 years old, but VW charged us only a nominal £100 becos they said they couldn't possible expect to charges us full rates for such a fault. I think they also gave us a free fire extinguisher (possibly on the advice of their lawyers.....)

So VW do seem to apply goodwill, but also sell prototype cars....

Dom, did Volvo even give you any goodwill discount on your hydraulicking incident?

Thought I'd combine a tenuous link to both Volvos and cars: just bought a V70 2.5 10v. Thing is both the log book and engine number think it's a 10v, but everything I've seen says the 10v is SOHC and the 20v DOHC. My engine says DOHC in 3" letters. The cam-cover is screwed down with 'Torx' (?) screws so I can't undo it to check. I thought a quick call to the local Volvo dealer would confirm, so after 15mins on the 'phone being passed around and waiting they said they didn't know if 10v are really DOHC, and they'd phone me back. Of course they haven't but if they don't know if an engine s/be SOHC or DOHC what the hell do they do when it comes to service it??? And incidently the cheapest annual service is £250. For a bl**dy oil change and general sniff-about! Might sell it soon if the dealer is as useless as they sound.

alas £250 seems to be going rate for services. I just had a 23k mile service two weeks ago. The oil alone, let alone labour and other parts, was £83 + VAT. That's some margin they're making......

Re: Renault goodwill? Pah!

your using the wrong dealer our lead time is 10 days but thats no good if your miles away, as for opening an espace bonnet when the cables bust its a 45 min job £42.00 + vat if you no what your doing ,your dealer obviously didnt.

i have stopped throwing money at volvo dealers after my engine blew after only 127000
the week before they had peered in bay and and claimed loose tappets was the noise i could hear

they then denied all knowledge
and tried to charge 3 grand for a new engine
got it sorted elsewhere and they service it now.

Ok brain let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

Wrong dealer indeed (sadly, London's full of them). And wrong make of MPV, too. After a year owning a Renault, have concluded that they're are a crock (not even my Range Rover is a unreliable!). Looks like the kids will just have to put up with being squashed into the back of an Impreza STi.

Re: certainly not a Sharon!

the incendiary device was an espace. The other mpv was a galaxy, quite okay, though the 2.8 is high revving, doing over 5,000 rpm at 115 which feels as though it will blow up.

Of course the correct NLondon answer is to buy an old cab. Heaps of street cred, no wassername charges, drive anywhere you like, in the buslanes AND no aggro outside certain blimmin office block i could mention which have outsourced the security, and could get a wassername dvd sorted in the back. In fact this is such a fab idea, why can't i get a speedy version with nice 5litre engine please?

Re: car for kids and suitable chariot for for edi

yeah, but they can't deliver one until 2004 apparently...unacceptible for an instant-gratification junkie such as myself. will soldier on with crappy Espace and lovely Range Rover, while getting my high-speed jollies aboard mentalist SuperMoto.
