I would ring them but they knock off at 5:30. Website doesn't say. Almanacs have been known to be wrong. Seems to be a serious lack of waterside petrol outlets in that neck of the woods. Can't find anywhere after Bradwell going north.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies. So I guess that means there is no waterside petrol from Bradwell up to ??????. I can't actually think where the next place might be. Yarmouth? The broads?

If you have a petrol boat, filling up from a garage is not much fun even if it is very close. :-(

Yes they do sell petrol (unleaded) at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, diesel as well, and it is eye wateringly expensive.

Hi there,

Some of you may know me already, just to confirm, we do indeed sell unleaded petrol at SYH. We'd be the first to admit that it isn't as cheap as we would like it to be, but due to several reasons we are unable to buy it in at any less than pump retail prices.

Due to the short shelf life of unleaded fuel and the relatively few number of petrol powered boats with fixed tanks thus requiring a waterside supply, the demand for U/L is quite low and as such we cannot buy in the quantities to obtain bulk discounts for fear of being left with 'flat' petrol.

The vast majority of petrol retailers are roadside and part of huge chains (supermarkets and fuel companies) who organise their own deliveries, meaning small independents roadside or otherwise have only a couple of suppliers who are prepared to deliver to them, thus meaning we are somewhat reliant on their prices. We do then also have to factor in running costs as such, namely pump maintenance and calibration, storage checks and certification.

Several years ago we did seriously consider whether we should continue to sell petrol, but we found that we were the only waterside supplier between Tollesbury and Lowestoft (although I am happy to be corrected if that's not accurate) and as such felt we ought to continue the service even if it was for very occasional 'get you home' emergency situations.

With regard Diesel, again we know we aren't the cheapest, we're not in the position to make it a loss leader as such as other suppliers may be able to, however we can guarantee it is a FAME free supply http://www.rya.org.uk/infoadvice/regssafety/reddiesel/Pages/FuelSupplies.aspx] (see this link) and we do try to keep an eye on prices and adjust them (not just up! ;) ) as and when we have a delivery.

I hope this helps clarify the situation.

IIRC when I was at Levington last year I seem to recall petrol being close to or north of £2 per litre.... Ouch!

Yup, from memory filling up a 5 litre plastic petrol can cost me almost £11 or £12 late last month, so slightly more than £2/litre now.

Perhaps petrol requires extra health'n'safety expenses, and higher insurance premiums, compared to diesoil which is relatively safe?
Or perhaps they have worked out how far the nearest petrol station is, and decided to take the p!ss just because they can!

they have to buy those limited stock`s of petrol up front & then dispense it at a few litres at a time.

1. there is a serious discount when fuel is bought in bulk
2. it may take a while to sell the fuel, but fuel prices only go one way: up. So, over time the profit margin will always increase

i would suggest its a service rather than a rip-off.

Don't think I agree

Petrol is sold almost at cost in garages and they can easily sell twenty thousand litres a day. Levington might only sell 20 litres on a slow day so the capital cost is sitting there earning nothing, there are extra insurance premiums, the staff who dispense it need specific training and it's a faff to do it. The vast majority of marinas don't sell it so Levington is providing a service to the likes of you and me turning up with our little 5l cans on which, even with £2 a litre and excluding all the capital, training, insurance and staff costs may make them £3.
