An official looking document has been given to me demanding a total of £111.63 including VAT to register under the data protection act 1998. I checked to see if the company making this demand was registered under the data protection register, the search revealed no company registered under its name?.
Alarm bells, I went to the official site for data protection, WWW.dataprotection.gov.uk/dpars.htm where a warning entitled "DO NOT BE MISLED" warns about demands from a list of companies and yes the company demanding money was on it.
It says "Organisations who wish to complain about correspondence recieved from these companies should contact their local Trading Standards Office.
Evidently if you do have to register it cost £35 and no VAT is payable.
As far as I know non-profit making clubs are except!
Hope this info/warning stops you being worried into sending off money.
All the best, stay allert!
