Do I need to check anything on mi\' shaft ?

The saga of the cutless bearing has reached a satisfactory conclusion. Prop was stuck fast, as was the bearing. Shotley engineers did a good job removing both for me in less than 3 hours. So, now I've got a stripped out P bracket, propless shaft and the new bearing arrives this week.

Is there anything I need to be looking at whilst it's all stripped out ? Naturally I'll wet'n'dry the shaft and inside of the P bracket but I was wondering if there's any benefit in checking the shaft alignment and how to do it ? The boat's only 5 years old and is shore-side at the moment. It think I remember reading somewhere that the shaft alignment should be checked with the boat in the water.

The answer's out there somewhere in the forum font of knowledge !!

Presumably the shaft is still in situ.
Therefore all you can do is reassemble the plot.

Alignemnt after reassembly if needed, is then only 'dooable' by adjusting the engine mountings.
This should not really be necessary.

Did you experience any vibration before?
If not just stick it all back together.
If vibes are felt, adjustement might be required.

This all might depend on the type of flexible coupling you have.
There is a school of thought ref aligning in the water.
Cos boats do bend/move etc whilst afloat.
I think this is a throwback to the 'wooden' days more than today's plastic stuff!
Stick all back and see how you go imho.

Yes, shaft is still in. No vibes before removal so I tend to agree - I'll just get it bolted together.

Thanks anyway

If you've bought a clearance fit bearing you can confirm alignment by test fitting the bearing in the P bracket. You should be able to spin the bearing in the carrier by hand. Once this is achieved then epoxy the bearing in place, leaving shaft supported, and bearing will be aligned with shaft.

Removal, heat carrier, epoxy softens and bearing slides out.

If it has one of those Volvo shaft seals you may want to take the opportunity to replace that too, they are supposed to be renewed at 5 years old. I know many peeps have had them on for much longer than that with no problems, but still.
