Do I need the ICC to go to Alderney?

Dear Forum,
I'm aware that one needs an International Competence Certificate to go cross channel to France. Does this also apply to the Channel Islands such as Alderney or are these considered part of the UK coastal waters? I'm planning to do this trip (being in charge of yacht on 65 +NM passage) in my own yacht with an experienced crew as part of my preparations to take the practical coastal skipper (and obtain the ICC then) course this autumn/winter. I won't go if the ICC is needed in Alderney. Your views greatly appreciated. Regards, Chris

Thanks for the messages, that's really helpful and reassuring. I will continue finalising my passage plans and hope to set sail for Alderney sometime next week.

Chris

No you dont, unless you intend to use the canal network. In theory you dont need the ICC anywhere in the EU territorial waters because ther is an agreement on mutual recognition of qualifications, same as you dont need an international driving license abroad in the EU these days. They are supposed too recognise and accept that we dont issue boat driving licenses.

Might make sense to have one for the third world bits like Greece and Portugal since you cant win an argument with foreign plod any more than you can here. But I've never heard ( for what thats worth) of the French demanding one.

Make sure you have your reg docs, your insurance docs, and passports.

If you want an authoritative statement, contact the RYA.

The Channel Islands are not part of the UK, strictly speaking they are dependencies, nor part of the EU. There are customs formalities on arrival, the Harbourmaster will give you the forms.

At least in theory you should fly a Q flag on arrival.

Alderney is great in fine weather, if you have time a cycle ride round the island is the best way to see it. If it blows from the NE Braye Harbour is not a nice place!

Not in Jersey anymore! (since around may / june) - Customs admitted that they had never actually found the info useful and therefore would no longer collect the forms.

Apparently no one importing drugs or illegal immigrants by boat ever declared this on the Customs form. Some people, eh!
