Looks like we could be on for a meet in Bembridge after all - on a very clear, calm, sunny day once I know what the hell I'm doing with a 26 footer She goes in on April 1st and will be staying in over winter so plenty of time practice and learn.

The rules we follow (not sure where they come from) are:
only need to fly the ensign when entering or leaving port (night or day), or at sea within sight of another vessel;
do not fly the ensign when racing;
need not be flown when no one aboard.

I am not convinced he knows a little as he says he is. He shows some depth of knowledge in some of his posts.Zagato is no troll - I have corresponded with him for a number of months on YBW and I can confirm that while he is _very_ concerned with doing everything properly, he apparently does not have a lot of experience, and loves to ask questions. If you look back he was on early in the autumn last year asking for much advice...sometimes 2-4 threads a day of assorted questions, asked very politely and usually thanking whomever gave him advice. More new sailors should take the time to ask as many questions as he does...IMHO.
Now, as to whether or not I am a troll...

Firstly I want to make absolutely sure of the meaning of your first sentence. It would be help if you could write a sentence in English or use a spell check or something but let me write it for you to confirm I am on the right track.

Was this what you tried to write? If so you can direct your observations to me or ask me. It's no good just muttering such remarks, especially after I took the time to describe my sailing experience from your first accusation. Why are you so suspicious and who are you to be worried about my level of knowledge, what's it got to do with you! I was just asking a question which was succinctly answered by the helpful people on this forum which I thank them for. I now won't feel like a teachers pet on his first day with a new pencil case if I put an ensign up.

Did you find any evidence in my "depth of knowledge" that could have supported your suspicions about me not knowing the "culture" of ensigns.Another shock that will concern you, and it's something you might want to spend a bit of time researching later on is that I didn't know what a backstay was until two days ago! I did my dinghy RYA course twenty years ago and if I recall my father only ever mentioned shrouds and halyards but having asked the question I now know what it is and was never accused of being a Troll when I asked.
As said I only ever sailed with my father a handful of times a year and had no responsibility for the boat, he taught me to sail on a basic level and I would just helm and as I said, he had no great knowledge himself. I bought my first boat a Drascombe two years ago (the guys rigged it for me on the first outing!) but I literally only sailed it 3 times.
I wanted to have a proper crack at sailing and so bought a great boat with the help of forum members, got a great mooring, with the help of forum members and I will learn to sail it, with the help of forum members (and an RYA course). I am very grateful for their help and I am sure they enjoy giving me that help and I will do the same for others when err IF I ever feel confident enough to give advice on sailing matters.
I'm glad I am showing "some depth of knowledge", it shows the enquiries and help is all paying off.

Anway Ensigns now ordered but had to order two so the kids don't fight over one - now that maybe just too much on a backstay lol.

Apologies Lakesailor. I didn't know he did one - love it I read about a guy buying a new one, driving it everyday until it dropped then years later he dragged it out of the barn and totally restored it. It has done over 200KM but is superb. He toured with it in his retirement and said he could have almost bought a house instead of the car at the time and really had to stretch to buy it - great story, great love affair with his car.
