Do I need a thermostat?

I've read some conflicting threads, some saying to leave the thermostat out some saying replace it regulary. I have a volvo 2003.
Whats the perceived wisdom on this - pro and cons?

Yes. Without a thermostat the engine will run cool and be less economical.

Condensation will occur in the engine and water concentration will build up in the oil.

I'd not expect the thermostat to require frequent replacement, however. Possibly never at all.

How often do you replace the thermostat in your car engine?

Replace it when the engine fails to reach its normal working temperature. Check its operation, along with all the other things to check, if the engine overheats.

... and if you have a calorifier for hot water it won't heat the water.
