I am having to make a filter to go onto the pickup tube in the fuel tank.
It will be mainly made of brass woven mesh and my question is what grade this should be.
The filter will be 65mm x 12mm diameter so quite a large surface area. Research so far leads me to think 40 or 60 grade with a leaning towards 40 grade.
All suggestions welcome.
Oh, in case anyone is wondering, an off the shelf option is not available.

The metal mesh filters on Volvo Penta pick-up pipes are a bit bigger than you're considering, from memory about 100mm x 25mm - so about 3 times the area. They're also, from memory, fairly coarse, perhaps 20 grade.

You should ideally not use brass. Yellow metal with modern fuel is advised against.
In general, I think it's best to get the dirt into the CAV or other filter where it can be got rid of, unless you have a good means of cleaning an in-tank filter.
I'd hate to think my tank was clean because no dirt ever got to the CAV filter.
