Have acquired a taste for Mojito cocktail whilst on a recent boat trip. Disappointing though, the supply of mint got curtailed due to lack of forethought on the part of the skipper when it ran out some 300m east of bermuda. Credible attempts to grow-your-own in a bed of Horta's volcanic soil proved fruitless.
Seeking advice from a friendly landscape and allotment designer, "jings, its a weed, fer christ's sake and will grow anywhere", I purchased a few potted specimen of mentha spicata, carefully sited them in secure location on the life raft (north facing) and waited ...
As far as I can tell, the growth rate of one plant is 2 new leaves per day. The plant as supplied came with 32 leaves. On a sustainable basis, therefore and allowing two leaves per cocktail, one plant ought to be sufficient for one cocktail per person per day. Thus with 4 on board 4 plants are needed with perhaps a fifth in reserve for crop failure. At that rate I'll be claiming set-a-side from DEFRA. This seems excessive so on a non-sustainable basis, one plant could provide 16 cocktails, minimum, or sufficient for 4 days allowing one cocktail per person per day.
The decision which way to go, either sustainable or non-sustainable growth, seems to depend on the length of the voyage and practical considerations as to whether a growbag full of mint plants is more useful than a liferaft, say?
Of course, the key is whether two mint leaves per cocktail are sufficient?
Turning to the lime which is another essential ingredient, there seems little to be done here other than lay in very large stocks but how can you successfully maintain the limes in good condition?
It should be taken as read that sufficient rum and 7up are in stock. Does anyone have a view on whether angosturra bitters is worth adding?
Help gratefully received ...
