DIY bilge pump strainer

I'm setting up a portable manual bilge pump. I was going to put three lead bands spaced along the last 2foot of pipe, block the end up, then drill loads of holes along the 2 foot section. Will this work as a strainer?

Yes, make sure the area of all the holes is at least equal to the area of the open hose end.
