If you are poor and into some very simple electronics how about a DIY AIS receiver?
Check out this link which tells you how to create a discriminator output for your VHF radio-simply as I understand an uncleaned audio output signal which on chanel 84/85 is AIS.
You feed it into your laptop using your sound card and a simple nmea convertor and read it direct or with Seaclear or similar.

Only issue is you have to keep VHF switched on right chanel but suggestion is use of a cheap seperate receiving scanner.

The AIS frequencies are 161.975 and 162.025 MHz.

Channel 84 receives on 161.825 and Channel 85 receives on 161.875 so I can't see how these are going to pick up AIS transmissions.

It is noted on site that chanel frequencies have been changed since early 2000s to accomodate AIS but if you have an older duplex receiver the tuning is as I understand it same as AIS..
However further research reveals its far simpler to buy an old VHF scanner on e bay for probably under £30 and add the £1 of mod required.
I am having a go with scanner so will keep you posted.
Clearly googling it the scanner buffs are very keen on this.
