Is anyone sitting next to their almanac (or just knows of the top of their head?)

Slow office day and I am thinking about BH August cruise options. Can someone tell me the distance Needles to Braye? Thinking a friday night hop would be good but can only get on the boat at about 5 ish and cant remember the distance. The old fuzz box seems to recall about 70nm but I might be wrong.

98 nm Ocean Village to Bray as I recall.

Went there on the day that Madeline McCann was abducted, how long ago was that now?

If you have Google earth there is a ruler tool for finding the answer to this sort of thing. Really handy for a rough idea of distances. Top tool bar, it's the one that looks like a little blue ruler. Click on start point, click on finish and select your units. 60nm concurs with answer already given.

You can also do rough route distances by changing the option from 'Line' to 'Path' once you have the ruler open. You can then do numerous legs and it will give you a total distance.

If I tried to run Google Earth on the works PC it would almost certainly crash my desktop, quite possibly grind the netwrok to a slow and painful halt and quite possibly conjur up the PLC IT Gestapo. It wouldn't suprise me if all three happened...

I am quite suprised that YBW remains under the radar and outside the companies internet filters, so for the time being I am limited to asking daft question on these hallowed pages in the hope that the less constarined of you are able to help out :)

Last time we went it took 3 hrs 15 mins , Lymington river to the end of the breakwater , average 24 knots and it was flatter than a flat thing .

We were spoilt with the weather going over , coming back the next day it was a north - easterly 3-4 with near on spring tide on the flood , . Was like a washing machine for the first half hour but then we settled into a steady 18 knot zig - zag for 4 hours .:( . When we got back to Lymington it was the only time i have seen SWMBO kiss the pontoon :D:D:D .:D

Just a thought, but if SWMBO kissed the pontoon on your return, does that not suggest a slower crossing speed may have been appropriate?

18 knots is still pretty quick in snotty conditions.

OK, a rather different boat, but I returned from Braye to Weymouth in a NE5/6 with the tide doing the same and it was pretty horrid conditions, but after the first five miles it was comfortable enough for one of the crew to take a kip in the forward cabin.
We were doing 7 knots to start and only brought the speed up to 10 knots as we began leaving the turbulence around Braye.
Our boat is just 23 feet which may account for our slow speed to a point, but in the same breath, sleeping in those conditions at any faster speed would simply not be possible.

I take your point about slowing but we found that about 18 knots at 45degrees on to the sea the boat stayed nice and upright with no slamming . Much slower than that and head to sea we found that more unpleasant . Mind you the further back we got the the better it got . SWMBO only kissed pontoon in jest , BUT , She does like to see the horizon from the boat and not wave tops:eek: . Still looking for a replacement tho :D (boat that is:rolleyes:)
