Disposal of pyrotechnics

I take then to our local chandlers. As they have appropriate storage facilities for storage before sale, they can also store them for disposal! Indeed, if they refuse to take old/out of date flares, I will go elsewhere to purchase replacements!

I asked about, in the end the local police took them, no problem at all...

Watching the news last night - I was not too sure that the Belgium police were too happy accepting French flares /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

CG team that I am on has been told to stop collecting old flares, it seems the storage we have at the station now does not meet some poxy EU regulation or summat. (We stored 'em for a while then they get taken to the MRCC, from where bomb disposal take them away)
We have collected tons of the stuff over the years so it's a real pain for the locals. Some police stations will take them, or your nearest MRCC should take them if you phone them first.
OK not much help on the IOW.......
Possible that local CG stations like ours might get 'legal' storage facilities one day but I wouldn't hold your breath.......................

Dog Watch, I hope you were joking.
Flares are very dangerous fireworks, and we are talking about out of date ones at that.
I'm not normally the most safety conscious person (unless all the others are bikers too!), but flares are pretty scary unless you are well out of range.

I used to burn off old flares at bonfires, but there are some pretty serious provisos. I had the fire brigade in attendance when I disposed of mine. Don't fire off old parachutes, as they burn until after they have come down. I also took some old paras off the boat I bought last year that had severely corroded ally tubes. If you try to fire something like this, there is a high chance of the tube rupturing as the rocket fires, and severe/life threatning injuries may result.

Really it is best to find an official disposal point, however hard that may be.

does anyoneknow what happens to them after you have given them to an 'official'? My cynical side recons they get shoved in land fill with everything else. Guess they might be transported in a more safe manner if taken by someone with a uniform. I can't imagine they go to the trouble of detonating them in a controlled manner.

point being, does anyone really know what's best for these bloody things?!

Take them to the lost property office round the back of Newport police station. They will take them off you with absolutely no fuss at all. I have personally taken several lots in there.
