Thinking about getting a little inflatable tender and electric outboard to use on the Thames and just reading the rules regarding licensing.

If you own a powered boat, you must display your boat’s name, exactly as it appears on your registration certificate, on each side of the bow and on the stern. (It is acceptable for owners of narrowboats to display the boat name in the traditional way on each side of the cabin.)

The name must be clearly marked in plain letters in the following minimum sizes:

5.1cm (2in) for a boat no more than 6.09m (20ft) in length

Is this for real? I have to come up with a name for a 2.6m inflatable and put this name on both sides and the transom? Do people do this? I have to say I can't remember noticing it before and there are quite a few little ribs buzzing up and down the river - maybe I need to take a closer look! If this is genuinely required then where would I buy such stickers that can go on the side of an inflatable?

Strictly speaking it is correct but I doubt you will be challenged if you ignore the rules. Most of us put 'T/T' followed by the name of our main boat and get a licence discount for the tender. You can buy vinyl names online such as from Sheridan Marine, Moulsford.
