Displacement versus weight

I always thought that the displacement weight of a boat was the same as it's actual weight if weighed on a set of scales, though I have recently been told I'm wrong. Are the two measurements different?

PS I do know how you arrive at displacement weight, ie weight of water displaced by a boat in a full tub of water etc.

actually I thought that was the weight of the boat, what it displaces in water, but maybe due to different densities etc.
