Hello,

The impellor on my Yamaha 2hp 2-stroke needs replacing.

I have taken the bottom end off the motor at the cavitation plate, including the drive shaft, without any problem.

I undid the bolts on the impellor housing and lifted it for about 2cm to expose the old impellor. But I can't slide it all the way up the drive shaft to remove it and the impellor as the drive shaft widens about 2cm up. It seems that the drive shaft is made up of a wider, outer tube, slid over a smaller shaft. How do I get this apart?

I have tried taking off the circlip at the gearbox end of the shaft - but this does not help either. There is clearly something else preventing withdrawal of the shaft from the lower end.

I have spent hours googling this problem this afternoon. I even took it to a Yamaha outboard dealer this afternoon, and he didn't know either!

You don't say what age but the diagrams I have looked at show the drive shaft as a single part.
The only thing they show holding the drive shaft in the gear box is the circlip on the bottom. Id expect it to pull out of the pinion once that is removed.

TYPICAL YAMAHA 2hp GEARCASE

Sorry not much help

I have a 2hp Yamaha, slightly different model, but I think the bottom end is the same. On mine I had to get a cir-clip off and then the impeller housing and shaft came away, leaving the gear behind. You gain access by removing the propeller and the propeller shaft housing with its gear.

Thank you to both of you - you are indeed correct. I took the circlip off again, and this time used some more welly and it all came apart nicely.

The impellor only had two paddles left (out of eight)!

Motor now running nicely, with a good healthy spurt of water coming out of the telltale.
