Has anyone got an idea (exploded diagram etc) of best way to dismantle a selden kemp rod kicker (round tubing, circa 25 yrs old)? (The only docs I can find relate to the newer rectangular profile versions).

Mine occasionally seems to 'catch' and support the boom, but generally doesnt. What is going on here? Is there an internal metal spring which is just going up thro the tubing but should always 'catch'. Or is there a gas strut as well which is faulty? Any help will be appreciated

They usually have a gas strut inside. If you take it apart, you'll be able to check and if necessary replace the gas strut. It may have the rating marked on it (eg 1200N), and you should be able to source a replacement rather cheaper than a Selden spare part.

Yes, but is the way to dismantle it, to push on the 2 lugs on the plastic collar that divides the 2 tubes, abd then pull apart? If so, my 2 lugs seem to be non push in able - even with judicious use of a hammer. Any ideas?
Thanks

You might ask Selden if they can send you a parts diagram for it, that would help understand how it's put together.

And when you find the stupid mild steel ram that Selden insist on installing inside is rusty as hell make sure you replace it with a much better and much cheaper s/s one.

Yes push, hard and lever out with a screw driver, or drill out the rivets at the other end and pull it out that way.
They really are very simple inside.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
To confirm, to dismantle you :
1) push in (hard) the lugs on the plastic collar that separates the two tubes and pry the collar out
2) pull the inner tube out of the outer - this will reveal the gas strut. At the end of the gas strut is a circular plastic disc the same size as the inner dia of the larger tube. Keep on pulling until this disc comes out of the outer.
3) this plastic disc simply unscrews from the gas strut.
4) if you are lucky you can simply unscrew the gas strut from the other end - which is a one inch disc of aluminum riveted to the smaller dia tubing. If you are unlucky you'll have to drill out the two rivets.
Yep, its very simply constructed!
Thanks again

Hi,
I've got exactly same Kemp round kicker that's seized, didn't know where to start, but I do now thanks to your post.
Could you tell me where you got the replacement gas strut.
Thanks
