I hope i have misunderstood your coments if so I apologise ..but if not......
I'm disappointed that a self-appointed Ayatullah should appear from NZ - always expected better of the place. These sort of forums seem to tend to the untidy so that thread content might not always be 100% within category. I like it that way- a benevolent anarchy.
And I don't want useless post competition in the Lounge - just cornered the market there... even then, there was a recent challenge with a b*ll*cks post. That a gentlewoman such as I should have to stoop so low as to be forced to write the B word.
Basically I don't log on to the Lounge very much for that reason. But I kind of expect a bit more from this forum which is why I find these kinds of posts baffling and a waste of time. I actually clicked on the original post with the expectation that I might read something slightly useful/interesting about dipping the ensign (a quaintly British tradition - sadly hardly any boats wear them here in NZ).
Instead it was more 'spam'. Hence my disappointment.
And just to address some of the other comments/questions.
I am a Brit and been an active member of this forum for many years and met many good people through it. I have only been living here in NZ for 3 yrs so I am not some 'foreigner' with an obscure sense of humour, as some of you jingoists suggest. As if that should matter.
And my avatar is the 'Buzzy Bee' keel bulb currently sported by Team New Zealand. Which is a rather successful yachting team in a prestigous sailing event called the Americas Cup. Thought I'd better spell it out cos it seems to have attracted virtually no interest in this place. But that is obviously because it's about serious sailing rather than the inane banter which seems to facinate so many of the regular (and most prolific) posters here!

Bl**dy hell, Suze, you're lookin' corking! Whatever you're using you should market it, you'd make a fortune! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As I have had the best part of a bottle of wine, talking over our respective lack of love lives with a gf all evening, anything I say from now on should be taken with the proverbial very large kilo of salt.
But I'm taking your remarks at face value as a compliment - and I should like to say - Thanks, darling!
The portrait up in the attic is screaming in agony ...
I've just taken a look down the first page of the SB forum - and you haven't initiated a single thread .... if you want serious threads then you'll have to do your bit to create them.
If this forum was just serious stuff on sailing then we'd get bored and it'd be very quiet ... if it was all joking then it wouldn't be a sailing forum ... so banter about sailing is welcomed as it keeps it in subject and seems to be the right formula to a successful forum... ok - sometimes there is more banter than perhaps some would like ... but I'll give you this for nothing - your crusade will get you nowhere ...
I don't have forum envy and feel the need to keep a post initiatived by me on the front page on a daily basis. I don't need to clock up millions of posts for the sake of it. It's about quality not quantity. Posts in recent weeks:
I don't meant to be a kill-joy although I'm obviously coming across as one. And yes I've contributed more than my fair share of banter over the years. But the analogy is often used that Scuttlebutt is a bit like a YC bar and you can chat about anything from sailing to politics and everything in between. Fair enough. But really if I was standing in such a bar and conversations were starting with statrements like "woukld you sleep in a wooden shed/hedge/meg?" or "what should you dip your ensign in?".... well I would move quickly on to the next patron. And if I found the whole bar fuill of such eccentrics I would move on to another place.
Ove the years I seen this forum cycle from periods of sillyness to sanity and back again. Usually the 'silly season' is during the northern hemisphere winter which is why I'm all the more surprised to see so much rubbish here during the start of your sailing season. If anything, it should be those of us from down under going stir-crazy and asking about wagging tails on dogfish!
Anyway, I've made my point. Obviously against the tide of general opinion but that has never stopped me before. As someone said earlier, it's a place for free speech and if you can't offer up some criticism now and again then what's the point?

nope - not a quaint tradition - compulsory, required and punished in the breach by a period in the Tower /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

again - nope, not much about sailing - now like any other international sporting event - all about sponsorship and who has the deepest wallet - not much real sailing involved. A friend recently back from watching it advised me to never bother going, he said it has to be one of the most boring sailing events now held... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
