I am thinking of leaving my boat on a swinging mooring from January until May at Dinner Key before sailing back to the UK .Does anybody have any experience of this facility.
Thanks

we were there

we stayed there a couple of different times - first just after they put in the new mooring field and the 2nd a couple of years ago -
we normally live on our boat - 40' jeanneau ds40 - but leave it for a week or two when we visit family for christmas - the last we knew the moorings were in good shape and they were redoing the mooring field by taking out some as the company that put them in made some bad assumptions on how big boats are that would use the field -- they have constant security during the day and a bit at night at least when we were there last -
the real issue is not the mooring itself but the boat security as this is miami

we have an email for the folks if you need it

We stayed there for a couple of nights in January this year and picked up a mooring outside the breakwater that protects the marina. The channels are quite shallow and there's quite a fetch across the bay if the wind is in the east. The shore facilities were essentially based on Portakabins on the west side of the marina itself. It was OK. There are plenty of bars and restaurants ashore and a nice park which is based around the guy who founded Coconut Grove.

The other option would be at Fort Lauderdale - are you a member of the OCC? If so, then the Port Officer may be able to help with a longer term berth. We left our boat in Ft L for five weeks over Christmas last year and a very reasonable price was to be had.

We left our yacht for a couple of weeks in Crandon Park marina on Key Biscayne last time we were there. It being Miami, we preferred the security of a marina, and it wasn't as expensive as we had feared. Staff were pleasant and helpful.

It was a bit shallow getting in with our 1.9m draft, best done on the tide. (The approach to nearby Dinner Key Marina looked even trickier). Crandon Park marina is opposite Miami Seaquarium, with good bus services into town.

buses

crandon park is also a good alternative - we lived in miami for 5 years and kept our boat at rickenbacker just down from crandon - it is well protected - during hurricane wilma they did lose a couple of boats on moorings but then again the winds were over 100 mph for a sustained period of time -
dinner key is a open to the east - but at that time of the year most of the wind is from other directions

bus service - you can get a bus from dinner key by walking out to the main street and for $.50 (1/2 of us$) that will take you around and up to the overhead train station - there is a west marine chandlery near by the station - it runs about 30 minutes - ask at the marina and they will tell you which one to take - if going to the airport you can also get a bus all the way there but a bit more inconvient but a lot less expensive than a cab

from cardon park if i remember correctly (i do have a bit of grey hair and that affects the memory) it runs on the hour and is about $1.25 to $1.50 i think - it has been a long time i got a bus pass for a month - it also runs to the overhead train station that can take you to down town miami --

the eating places, bars and chandlery in the dinner key area are expensive - you can walk up to coconut grove and have a lovely time with lots of bars ect

hope this helps
