I AM LOOKING TO REPLACE MY NARWHAL 240 INFLATABLE COMPLETE WITH SLATTED FLOOR FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE BETTER
I DO NOT KNOW IF I WANT A SIMILAR ONE OR MAYBE A MINI RIB NO BIGGER THAN 2.7 METRES
MY OLD ONE ALWAYS SEEMS TO HAVE WATER IN THE BOTTOM AND YOU GET YOUR FEET WET! ( & BUM) DO YOU GET THIS PROBLEM WITH A RIB
I HAVE A 5HP ENGINE SO DO YOU THINK A RIB WOULD PLANE WITH TWO PEOPLE?
LOOK FORWARD TO ANY COMMENTS

If you get a RIB with a double floor then wet feet will be a thing of the past, not so the wet bum syndrome, but probably better than an inflatable.

5hp engine I doubt will plane the boat with 2 people. I have a 3.1 RIB which we sometimes use with a 4 hp and it will just about plane with one of the kids in it, no way with 2 or more.

There some superlightweight ones (Viking?) with aluminium hull, have to be a bit more careful than grp, and sure that they do a 2.7ish meter x 1.5. bet you can't really plane 5hp with 2, need nearer 10 imho, depending on size of people - we had 8 hp to plane with 2, but a better hull and lighter construction, it might. The light ally ribs were in Itchenor.

The problem with RIBS is weight, as in weight on your davits and weight when you're hauling the thing up a beach. You've got a choice between a pukka Avon type double skin floor RIB or a cheaper and lighter single skin floor RIB like Valiant. Personally I would go for the single skin variety unless you're going to be landing the thing on rocky shores or the like. A 5hp motor will just about make a light 2.7m RIB plane with 2 peeps on board but better 8hp

I had a Valliant 2.7m with an 8hp and it used to fly 'cause it was so light. Would easily plane with 2 up, so would guess you could get it up there with a 5hp, providing you had a fair wind!

Try Flatacraft however, I have a Wetline Dinghy 260 that has a 3.3 on the back which goes quite well. They aren't too expensive but do come with an inflatable floor. Had it two years now and has been great despite snide comments from the Bombard agent about it not lasting 18 mnths!

Re: valiant

I had a 3.1m zodiac RIB for a while but I thought the handling was pants due to flat bottom, how ever it was the flat bottom that allowed it to plane with small engines.

I mention this because Valient RIBs have a 2 stage hull- deep V at the front and flat rear section, does anyone know if this system works or is it just a gimmick?

Re: in support of Valiants

Can most strongly recommend the small Valiant Ribs. They are cheap and supposedly inferior to Avons, eg they have single skin floor not double. But IMHO they are fab, ultra light and excellent build kwality. We've had one as a render with 5hp for a couple of years, liked it so much I got another for kids to play in at their grandparents house-by-sea. Gludy hereabouts got one too. But agree wth others you need 10hp to plane and zip around with 2 people.

I believe Barnet Marine and Ron Hale marine do best discounted prices. Also for Merc outboards, which are the best imho.

Bought a Valiant 3m RIB (I'm pretty sure it's double skin) with a Merc' xr10. My son loved it! I frightened m'self silly. Goes like manure off a shovel. But, it seems quite heavy. Now 5 years old and wearing well.

Be warned that unless you have reasonable reserves of HP on your boat, dangling all that wieght over the transom is not a great idea.
