Where would people recommend as a good place for a small child to go sailing in a small dinghy near Edinburgh? Fresh water preferred, sheltered sea fine. Launching ramp essential, changing rooms and showers a bonus. Modest fee not objected to.

Saint Mary's Loch, by Peebles, not quite near Edinburgh, but close enough in my opinion. You can pay a fee to the club for day sailing.

See the 'Joining' section for day sailing temporary membership.

There is also Hillend Reservoir and Monklands Sailing club, again not far: -

http://www.monklandssailingclub.org.uk I used to sail here a lot when I was a kid, it is not deep, a 420 mast would get stuck in the mud after a capsize. I have not seen the place in years but it has always remained popular.

That's a nice idea. I used to drive past St Mary's Loch on my way from Galloway (where I live) to Northumberland (where I flew glider) and had completely forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me. Monklands looks good but a tad too competitive.

Port Edgar? Slip, showers, and younger sailors use marina itself often if it's blowing/rough. Sneak out for a bit of adventure if weather is good. Need supervision tho' with all the construction traffic. Sailing school maybe an option ?
You might bump into Dylan too.
