Dinghy pronounced \'ding-ee\'

I find this pronounciation really irritating, is it a motorboat thing? or a South Coast thing? I have noticed on most of the sailing programmes on tv the last few years, about the Boat Shows, or other documentaries, the presenters say ding-ee. I feel like telling the bbc & itv to check their pronounciation with the RYA, but I'm sure they wouldn't bother anyway! Also I work for a boatyard on the east coast, who used to say dinghy, but as they have grown, and buy and sell more (motor)boats from the South coast, I have noticed that they now say ding-ee (and ignore my comments). Does this irritate anyone else, and do any or you say ding-ee?

Yes! Tankyou, someone else who gets irritated by it. My wife says it that way and it really annoys me. Then again most things my wife says annoys me. Lose lose situation. I only have myself to blame, I should have kept my mouth shut!

Re: \'scuse I

No, I don't say dinghy to rhyme with thingy, that's what I am complaining about! Mind you, saying it to rhyme with dingy is possibly even worse. I can't think of a word to rhyme with how I (and most people) say it, but you hear the 'h'. 'Ding-h-ee' is the best I can do!

The word dinghy in common

usage is spelt as an anglicisation of the Hindi word 'dingi' or alternatively in Hindi 'dengi'.

The proper pronounciation should therefore, IMHO, be 'dinegee' or 'denegee'.

Please could a Hindi speaker comment.

I gotta say there's only a silent H in my dinghy.

Re: Come off it

Earlier this year I was having a cockpit to cockpit chat with a Frenchman, who enquired about pilotage for Bucklers Hard. His almanac, or pilot, or whatever, had scared the willies out of him (as they tend to do). During the course of the discussion I, for the purpose of his better understanding, and using my particularly fine Allo Allo accent, referred to the Beaulieu as the Beau Lieu. "I thought it was pronounced Bewlee" says he. Sometimes you just can't win.

Re: \'scuse I

Not too worried about a silent "h", but I have often been concerned that I might get up one morning and find a crew member has had a "p" in the dinghy.
