Dinghy for cruising

The gent in the video below has a very appealing new point of view on dinghy cruising. New to me, anyway.

Even if you find the whole idea of dinghy sailing wretched, it's an economical idea that could catch on.

Our Captain of cruising attends all venues in his RIB, famously once an overnight in the Beaulieu river. It was about 12c and blowing old boots, but he refused all offers of a sound berth, and slept aboard his 4.2m rib. We, and a guy with a Vancouver both offered to put him up, tempted him with whisky and a diesel heater. He was 80 years old at the time.

Dinghy cruisers, one of the things they lack of course is heads. This resulted, on one infamous occasion at The Folly, when a rally for dinghies appeared, of my wife being confronted on the pontoon by a ‘gentleman’ taking a leak against our port bow in full view. To say she was not impressed…. Our Captain of cruising would do no such thing.

He put sails on one of his other ribs in another video.

The whole point of dinghy cruising is so you don’t need to use marinas/pontoons and can go to isolated places where even yachts don’t go.

Dinghy cruising is a lot of fun, but it can also be a lot of work just to do really basic stuff like make sure you have a dry bed!

We have a portable 12v winch for dealing with our harbour tender at low water. It’s about 350kg. The winch is slow, but barely notices the load.

Our guy does’t bother with sails, he can do 30kn with his Yam. 70.

If a dinghy cruiser had taken a leak off the back of his boat whilst anchored in Newtown creek OH would not have batted an eyelid. But 10ft from her, just to nonchalantly take out his todger and pee on her boat did cause the Wrath of God to be foisted upon him.

That todger needs the same treatment suggested for a rope fender in the other thread. I'd have been seriously p'd off too.
