Dilunett Gel - where can you buy large tubs?

Hi,

I want to use Dilunett Gel to remove antifoul, anyone know where I can buy large tubs?

I can only find 1 or 2.5 ltr

Decided not to blast the hull..

Ideas?

Where are you based ?? i bought from force 4 last year chichester... used 2 x 2.5ltr pots to do half a 38 foot boat I still have 2 litres left over.... I never really had any sucess with it. the key to it is keeping it moist, I was recommended slapping it on then covering the hull overnight with cling film to stop it evaporating.... it did'nt work very well. ended up buying an electric scraper / chisel and scrapping it off. took two of us 3 weekends to do a 38 foot boat.... never again get it slurry blast if the yard alows.

Dilunet is nasty stuff cover up eyes / overalls / head gear and gloves --- IT BURNS !!

I'd echo Aidy's advice. At least, before you buy a large tub of Dilunette, buy a small one. This will enable you to find that it is near to useless. International AF Stripper is a bit better but very messy and quite expensive. If you want cheap, effective AF removal, buy a good, carbide scraper, or two, one for the wife!

If you wanna do it yourself i can recommend the bosch electric scrapper but round the edges off first.

like this one..... i bought a couple of cheaper versions.... when lidl were knocking them out for £15

Never heard such rubbish!!! DIlunette is by far the most effective stripper - if used properly. It has to be applied thickly and can then left for several days to work its magic. Once it has dried out and stopped working, pressure wash it off with the majority of the antifouling. It is nasty stuff because it is strong and therefore works!

Be careful

In your experience must you continuously work the stripper to penetrate the AF - I have 10 years' of AF and suspect one dosing would not work. And I too have a 38 footer!

Also, I believe the stripper only works in warmer weather - understood, chemcial reaction etc - so does this mean it dries off before it is fully effective?

If Dilunet burns does this endanger the gellcoat?

Finally, I have had Removall 620 AF stripper recommended - its website claims eco this and that - can you or another poster say if it suffer the same limitations as you experienced with Dilunet?

not used the removall stuff but heard it works.

I had 10 years of erodinding international A/F to remove. I tended to slap the dilunett on on a thursday and try and remove it at the weekend, it needed two goes.... it doesn't burn a GRP Hull. It was about march time last year typically 10 degree's dipping to about 5 at night.

I have never used Removall 620 but I have used 220, which is another of the gel ones, to strip the hull of a Hunter 490 and for some work on GRP cars. Having used it, I would never go back to Nitromors etc.

The key is time. It doesn't work like a methylene chloride paint-it-on-and-watch-it-bubble stripper. Instead you paint it on and leave it at least a day or, in colder weather, two. The paint then has a few small wrinkles but is otherwise apparently unaffected. Then you discover that it has actually turned to a paste and can be removed with practically no effort. Brilliant stuff.

have used Dilunet before, found it very good. Well aware of protecting myself. I still have a 2 inch scar from 5 years ago...will ensure i use elbow length gloves and goggles.
Not convinced by blasting - it will damage my epoxy, also, not convinced by using an electric scraper..can see this taking chunks of the hull out!

I aim to complete my hull in one day.....

so...I will use a manual scraper- lobide? with plenty of dilette....

suspect it might be a 24 or 48 hour day.

my experience

Dilunet worked for me, provided it is slapped on thick and, either in moist weather or secured with cling film, left on to do its chemical task for a day or so.
I was allowed to pressure wash off - VERY MESSY. It was club land and I cannot imagine any decent yard to permit that.
The stuff is very caustic and gives you burns when left on the skin, so messing with a pressure washer is something I wouldn't do again.
Called experience.

Removall is a different kind of beast. It worked on severall layers of hard and soft AF for me. Slapped on and secured with cling film, it turned the old AF into a dough like paste which could be taken off with a putty knife easily.
Mine came with a proprietary plastic film, but not enough.
Few areas needed a second go for 12hrs or so.
Less messy for the environment, but you still need to cover the floor and throw away the clothes afterwards.

I had tried the handscraper before and would have surrendered. Electric tools I did not try.

If slurry blasting is not an option, I would go for Removall again any time.

I suspect the effectiveness of scraping (particularly using power tools) depends on how well the hull was primed before the first anti foul coat was applied. I could see no evidence of primer at all on my old Moody when I scraped it last year. And twenty years of AF came off relatively easily in big thick flakes. It was still a horrid job though. I suggest you try an area and see.

One big advantage of blasting is that it prepares the surface for the primer. So if you scrape the AF off you will still have to sand the surface afterwards. Which is surprisingly hard work.

I've used the RemovAll 620 a few times now and have always been very pleased with the results. Quite amazing stuff when you consider it doesn't burn or smell - you hardly know it's there. Much safer than Dilunet. I get it from: www.cirrus-systems.co.uk . They do a big bucket - 20 litres.
