On our recently purchased boat I have been checking the wiring to the instruments one being a digipak S depth sounder and the other digipak L loch speedometer. I found that the connection had been made incorrectly and now that they have been corrected the units come on and the displays are working. The speedometer appears to function ok but not tested while boat is driving yet, the paddle wheel seemed ok when checked while the boat was out the water. The depth sounder I found has had the wire damaged near to the transducer and a connection made in it, after connecting the unit correctly the unit is flashing SOND continuosly which i think means the transducer is not connected. For this reason i will trace the wire all the way back through the boat to establish if here is anymore damage. My question is in the manual it states that if the wire has been cut or damaged the transducer will require replacement is this true and if so does anyone know where i can obtain a replacement unit

Generally the makers advise that the cable should not be shortened, but if you can see a damaged part then redoing the joint without significantly reducing the lenght you should be ok, in most there are only two/three wires and shield, joined properly they should not effect the performance of the sounder too badly. At least this is what we have found. Saves drilling huge holes in bulheads and the like.

Hi thanks for the info, after looking at where the joint has been made i find that the cable is badly oxidised and gone black so I will clean with some fine glass paper and solder the connections together to see if it fixes the problem. And the cable is a simple single core screened type.

Hi again now had some time to examine the sounder transducer and find that the screen part of the cable is very badly corroded right back into the transducer and there think that it is also damaged internally so cannot get a connection and the unit will not work (flashing SOND all time) I have looked for a replacement and think it is the Plastimo part number 26009 but not absolutly sure. However although it is a removeable type the boat would have to lifted from the water to replace it, does anyone know of a IN-HULL type that will work with this unit ?
