I am in Brighton Marina. I can not receive the Portland transmission clearly although my receiver appears to be OK for short distances. The unit is set to Hi. Has there been problems or am I alone?

You're unlikely to receive Portland from Brighton. Try for Solent or even Dover.

I find Coastguard weather report timings increasingly unpredictable in the south west but maybe it's just me not keeping a good listening watch.

Incidentally we had remarkable reception conditions along the Conish south coast this Saturday. In one ten minute period we picked up a Pan Pan from Solent Coastguard, a Mayday from Brixham, routine traffic from Falmouth and Portland and a securite broadcast from Cross Corsen

I think your VHF antenna would have to be very high indeed to get Portland weather transmissions and it doesn't make any difference to receiving range if your equiment is on Hi or Lo, that setting is only for transmit power. Listen to Solent CG's transmissions, they cover the Portland area if that's what you need.

There is a land line number you can try - charitable organisation (Coast Watch I think) who can give you up to the minute reports for Portland Bill weather and sea state and I think will also give you weather predictions too. We called them on Saturday and they were really helpful. 01305 860178. They didn't ask for a donation, although I'm about to post a cheque to them. Have a good passage - we took the inner route and had a great time!
