Ok - so I have a plotter that takes MMC and SD cards ..........

Now has anyone had success backing-up a Navionics MMC or SD card to PC in case of damage / loss of data on card ?

Second - the plotter advises that you can write to card ... same card without loss of chart data or change card ?

An SD card reader will read and display the contents of a Navionics or NauticPath card, but I haven't tried backing-up the data or writing anything else to the cards in case there's some clever little software routine that says "Aha...someone is trying to make a copy" and wipes it all out! So, who's going to try first??

SD card is write-protectable ...... MMC is not - that is why I'm concerned ......

I cant find in manual any reference to writing to the chart card ... yes plenty about saving to card - but nothing as to which card - chart card or another etc. And backing up is not illegal - it is accepted practice even on dvd's if you are legal entitled to the original in your hand...... about the only good thing about EU !!

I tried to copy Navionics XL3 which is on an MMC card.....didnt allow it and didnt ruin the card either. Not surprisingly they dont want you to copy. I wanted to make a copy since I'm bound to forget to remove the card from the plotter one day and some kind thief will then remove it for me.

Wonder what would happen if you used the Navionics viewer - Sailplan .... program by Software and Navigation ... (SW&N)

There are other viewers as well ...

a normal MMC card has a file system, rather like your hard drive, so you can't overwrite existing content... it'll merely inform you politely when its full and not let you write anything else to it..... however, equally, you can also delete stuff... as Nigel pointed out, its not write protected....... so caution needed when clearing space... however, not sure if the chart companies have added clever copy protection code?
