If I am going to sail through winter I need a heater. It is a 27ft yacht so a D2 is the one. I see it is £1400 for the marine version at mailspeed, £1600 at force4, but considerably less for some of them on e-bay.

is the marine kit so much different to a motor kit, this one is £705 for the same heater. Is it built differently, surely there isn't £700 of extras needed to fit it on a boat.

AFAIK all you need is a longer exhaust with skin fitting and possibly some extra ducting, Y piece and extra outlet. These are available on ebay so I suggest you price them up. Possibly the saving will not be as great as you think but you should save a few bob.

The price difference is the usual "marine" scam. The actual heaters are essentially identical, but it's the warranty which differs. In order to maintain premium pricing for boat heaters, Eberspacher offer "marine" versions which have warranty if fitted in a boat, and "vehicle" versions which don't have warranty if they're fitted in a boat.

The eBay supplier you linked to has the vehicle version of the D2 at £705 and the marine version at £1305, so £600 difference. The marine kit has the insulated exhaust and stainless skin fitting, a mounting bracket, plus a bit more ducting. Hardly £600 worth of extra equipment!

Properly installed, Eberspachers are very reliable and will give many years' service. I'd imagine the chances of failure in the warranty period are slim, so you might consider buying the non-marine version and accepting that there'll be no warranty on it. If so, you can get them cheaper, eg £625 from Turkey, although there may be duty/tax to pay on import.

I have a Mikuni MY30 pleased so far after 5 yrs.
i have had webasto & ebersplutter as well with expensive repairs.

Final difference after you have bought all the proper parts, ducting, marine silencer, skin fitting, vents etc is probably closer to £200, and there are slight differences in operation control, run down times and the like, so with an Eberspacher you will pay around £200 for a three year warranty. And knowing that there will be somebody trained properly with access to the latest service bulletins and diagnostic to back you up if you have problems. It really is your choice, you may get away problem free for years, you may not.

I have several D2s on the workshop racking all without their ECU ( £250 min.) They are the weak link in the D2s failing ( in my experience) much more often than any other componant.
I am now happier/more confident to sell the older D1LCcompact and D3LCcompacts as I believe they are more reliable.
So the 3 year warranty may be worth while if buying new. I thought that there was sometimes an issue with DIY fitting and warranties though.
FWIIW the giy from Turkey is quite reliable.
