I may be going south from Caernarfon for a few weeks and will be calling into Milford Haven, Padstow, Falmouth, Brixham, and Dartmouth, and probably one or two more ports. Can anyone advise about cheapest prices for Diesel ( I usually take on 500 litres + and from road tankers when possible). Also best berthing prices, thanks

Avoid fuel in Salcombe and Dartmouth, way OTT prices. Fuel barge in Falmouth has always been competetive but do haggle!

Darthaven on Kingswear side is a good relatively cheap marina, as is the Falmouth town quay marina.

Correcting a stupid decision, Guernsey's Minister of Treasury and Resources has just announced that marine diesel in Guernsey is now over one third cheaper than in Jersey.

No fuel in Fowey on a Sunday

During my recent unexpectedly extended cruise (due to the ‘summer’ weather conditions) from Weymouth down as far as Fowey, I ran down to my last 2 gallons of diesel. I know I have a saily yacht but I needed to get my crew home at a certain time and might have needed the engine if the wind had fallen very light.

We spent Saturday night in Fowey and were informed by the harbourmistress lady that fuel was available from Tom’s Yard but she wasn’t sure of the opening times. We did ask several other yachts and workboats about the opening times but no-one seemed to know anything. Anyway, on Sunday morning we went to this modern (in 1907 it would have been modern!) yard and tied up to the rusty pontoon avoiding the trailing, chewed up old ropes in the water. I went to find help and came across a man nearby who was presumably Tom or son of Tom. He said “We don’t do service on Sundays. We used to open but nobody came so we stopped.” I said that I was very low on fuel but got no reply.

As we were about to leave, a local came onto the pontoon. We mentioned there was no fuel and he said “What! You expect him to be here all day looking at you through binoculars sitting on your yacht waiting for you to come and buy diesel?” It was difficult to work out whether this was said in jest or whether he was serious.

Anyway, the moral of my story is that there is no fuel in Fowey on a Sunday and I am not too sure what the service is like on other days.
