diesel vs petrol fact

did you now that it is now cheaper to buy a diesel engine van than a petrol engine equivelant (according to van salesman) - just hope the boating industry goes the same way

Yep, inmost car ranges diesel is the same cost as petrol. I have said for years that a diesel costs no more to build/make than the equivalent petrol. But, we are in a market driven by supply and demand. While we keep paying a premium, they'll keep charging it.

10 years ago diesels in cars were cheaper cos they were poo and nobody wanted one. Now, much better, same price. 5 years, diesels will be more expensive as demand continues to rise. Thats why BMW now do 5 diesel engines in the 3 series, 10 years ago it was 1.

Does anyone make a petrol engined van?? Depends how big the van I suppose. My dad had a petrol engined truck once. But that was about 50 odd years ago. Then he switched to diesel.

Not sure diesel engines cost the same as petrol engines to make as the block on a diesel engine has to be designed for much higher compresssion ratios and diesel injection pump is complex and manufactured to v high tolerances. Plus diesel engines have turbos, most petrols dont. Usually diesel engines weigh more than the equivalent horsepower petrol engine so the material cost must be higher.
If diesel engined cars cost the same as petrol, and in most ranges the diesel still costs more, its because there's now more economy of scale with the diesel engines as they outsell the petrol engined cars

Shouldn't that be van derived cars, surely nobody designs a car like that, but designing a van like that makes more sense. BTW, I drive a Berlingo - very pleased with it, although it is petrol!

It used to be that diesel cars were more expensive than petrol because petrol engines far outweighed diesel engines in terms of production and therefore unit costs. Also, the diesel block is much heavier so different springs, suspension etc were required.

Not so today - and will leisure boats catch up with this? Not likely!!

Direct injection has helped bring the cost of the diesel engine down in price as they no longer need a flash pump to distribute the diesel.

Nah, I'm afraid he's right..it is a car derived van...the van is a derivative of the car from which it is based upon.
