Diesel Tank Cleaning

Syphon thro the filler inlet but farly limited access or take it out?????? Do you need to clean it/are you having problems??

I have done several tanks by using a vacuum pump (aka pela). The tube slips down into the tank and when you hear it hit the bottom start pumping and jiggle the tube gently. Even with the small bore of the tube I have never had the tube block and have cleaned some real dirty tanks, my one included. It is not 100% clean but as near as makes no difference.

If you can take it out it's easy - put a length of chain down through the filler neck and shake the tank around. That's how I did the tank on my last boat. Otherwise cutting an access hole is the only way of making certain that you've cleaned it out properly.
A half-done job is worse than not doing anything, as it just dislodges loads of muck without removing it properly, and then it goes down the fuel lines and blocks all your filters.

[/ QUOTE ]Absolutely, but removing 90~95% of the crud, water, gel, bug etc. is better than leaving it to build up until it does get sucked into the filter. I have not had a blocked filter nor have any of the other boats I have used this method on. - The method works and is beneficial when removing the tank is a PITA.
