Looking at his profile it might be difficult to go elsewhere!

He should contact his local HM Customs office to see if this is true. If not, confront the Marina Operator and ask for an explanation. Probably they are trying to get a mailing list together by subterfuge

I think they are miss-reading a customs and excise requirement.
I'm sure that this applies to red diesel served into cans and then only over
100 ltrs. It doesnt apply if delivered directly into a boat.

We were allowed upto a 100 litres of red diesel in cans from Red Post Garage near Totnes, and if we wanted more could we go back next day please.

Simple way round it.

just had a missive from

the VAT man. they are cracking down on sales of hooky diesel and other things.
i suspect that it is your supplier who is being overzealous in attempting to provide a paper trail of sales to cover his own arse if he is accused of selling more than he has officially bought.

In Cornwall H.M Customs have taken to visiting private homes, knocking on the door, "Sir we are here
to dip your tank" apparently this is new approach and from what I can gather from them is that
anyone with a diesol car is likely to have a visit, that is if your car is taxed in your name!
buy my diesol from a local supplier 200 litres at a time, no problems !

They started doing this in Lymington last year (all fuel, not just diesel). Can't remember the explanation they gave, but only had to do it once, after that they just noted your boat name if you were already registered

Years ago I worked for a company that shipped its products out by truck. Consequently the yard regularly had 10 or 20 trucks loading or waiting. Excise men used to call in very regulalrly, e.g. weekly, to dip the tanks of every truck present, looking for red dye.

barite

used to use bentonite and barite as drilling mud constituent, is very slippy when mixed with water and makes a good lubricant for oil drilling, it is also used because it is heavy and can control any gas that is trying to escape out of the hole when you enter a gas and or oil formation.
however it is also a very good filter medium and i am told that it can be used to filter the red dye out of red diesel and that the reveners are very keen to talk to people who are in possession of such materials without just cause !!

Re: barite

"bentonite and barite"

Where do you get it if you are not working in the middle of the North Sea?

Back in the 50s the petrol in army vehicles was stained red and the colour could be filtered out through a loaf of bread!

Red dye - yellow marker

You can get rid of the red colour and residue in tank ..... but the yellow marker is persistent !!
