I had a Lucas priming pump between my tank and first filter - it speeded up the bleeding process no end. The diaphragm has split and no possibility of getting a spare where the boat is located (Uruguay).
So I am going to replace it.
Anybody using one of these and care to recommend? It would be useful if it could be plumbed into the 3/8 inch copper pipe.

asap do one that fits onto a CAV filter head, 2 types one pushes the other sucks

Had a similar problem, got over it by feeding diesel return into a small header tank mounted above the engine with overflow back into main tank below engine. Header tank can feed the engine for bleeding through a T into main feed with stop valves between the T and each tank. Dead easy provided the stop valves are used correctly. Sealed the priming pump diaphram leak with silicone but would be more tidy to remove it.
