What's the forums best guess at marina prices for diesel next year, for say up to 20 gallons, Raggie amounts. If more than the price of road diesel will you fill up by cans from the garage.
For me, there would have to be a significant difference to be bothered with carting cans of diesel about, much easier to just accept that the fuel will cost a little more than road fuel and get on with it. In fact its always been possible to buy red diesel cheaper than at the marina, who bothered before?
I do, not for economy but for ease. I find it far simpler to buy fuel on the way to the boat then to mess about with the fuel berth, waiting for marina staff to dribble red all over my decks. I syphon fuel into the tank whilst getting on with other jobs and don't spill a drop. It also stops spare fuel in the can sitting unused for long periods although I'm not sure this matters with diesel.

It's not marina staff that dribble red all over my decks, it's me, struggling with a 20 litre can and a funnel.

Thanks for the tip. I've given up wishing I could think of such things myself.
If you are going to syphon, get one of those devices that the German guy sells at the boatshow, they work well! Made out of Alli they should last a long time.
Used one of these to transfer diesel whilst halfway across the Celtic sea, a good test!
I'm figuring power boats do us a favour. If it wasn't for them a storage tank full at the local marina would last years and be full of bugs? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif .... If they all commit their boats to floating caravans I may start filling the boat from a can? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Lets get in perspective. For a yachtie who uses the white things the cost of diesel is an irrelevance.
Perhaps I am an extreme non motoring type, but my costs this year were
* marina berth £3,750
* other boat costs £3,000
* diesel £26
The filters and oil for the engine service were more expensive
