Forget all the hoo ha about the goverment increasing prices in 2007. Just look at the price per litre since last year! I was paying 37p a litre last year and now MDL Chatham are charging 48p per litre this year!

God help us all if in 18 months time the government decide to treble prices! I will sell the boat or use it as a static caravan! I know there is a forum for the fuel debate, but not a lot happens there! anyone know where to buy it at last years prices around the Medway?

Regards Barry

Barry,

In April road diesel was 90.1p average price (source AA survey). So, add 5% for marina higher costs - say 95ppl (£4.32/gall) after tax is imposed. My Targa 39 did 1.3mpg at 22kts which equals £3.33 per mile. So, Cherbourg and back from the Needles will be £400. That's why I sold my mobo and bought a raggie - I'd rather spend the £400 on lunch when I get there! The whole prospect taxed marina diesel is daunting and I'm amazed that the mobo market is reacting as it is.

As you say - it's bad enough just with crude at $50+ per barrel - with tax it will be a killer to the mobo UK industry. Beside me in the marina is a brand new Princess V58 - lovely boat - about £800k's worth. To refuel it will cost about £2,400 from empty. I suppose if you can afford £800k then £2.5k is loose change - but it's the boats at the normal end of the market that will be shafted; which is a shame. We'll have huge expensive mobo's and raggies on the water after red diesel has gone - I think the guys in the middle will just be priced out.

Talking to mate the other day, talk got round to why diesel has gone from 3-4 p cheaper than petrol, to 4 p dearer than petrol. He put it down to Mr Brown increasing road fuel duty on diesel as it did more mile/gal than petrol, thus equalling out the tax share between the two fuels.
If he can use this as a reason to increase duty on motor diesel, how can he justify rising marine diesel, as few boats do a lot of milage on the roads !!!!!!!!!!.

Forget Red Diesel

What you need to do is just get the road duty off the price.

Just tell them you use the cars to get to the boat so pay your duty their then when you are out to sea no roads used so why pay it.

Daft really that your paying for a tax you dont even see the benefit of.

Re: Forget Red Diesel

In Pwllheli Marina Diesel has gone from 30p a year ago, to 36/37p at the end of last season to 46p now...hat's over 50% increase in 12 months. Not much you can do about it though.

Re: Forget Red Diesel

Do these increases in any way reflect what is happening in the world oil market or are we seeing what is only a British phenomenon ?
If the latter then at this rate it may pay us to club together and get our own fuel bowsers.

Dont think the prices charged now, are anything to do with fuel costs. The comercial pump in Brixham is still only charging 24.9 PL. Think the added charges is just because the marinas/barges have formed a cartel and get away with it cos nearly knowone hunts around for best prices.

Re: Forget Red Diesel

We used to get our fuel from a tanker in Pwllheli, it was less than 2/3 of the price of the marina pumps, but the only place you could fill up was part of the marina and they eventually stopped it happening - I think it's because about half the bigger motorboats had cottoned on and started doing it, which would have really hit their own turnover.
