Turned the ignition key for engine/coil pre heater. Instead of normal steady high pitch noise (which I assume is normal) we just had a very sorrowful short wimpy, out of breath wheeze which trails off very quickly. All the lights are on the display and the battery is ok and the engine fires. Something to do with ignition switch or more serious? Cannot guarantee that the heater warning light was on though. Any thoughts?

Depending on what engine or which set up you have I wouldn't worry
The audible warning, I presume thats what it is, should cease after a short time if all is well.
Croaky or not!
If the failing banshee persists after the engine has started or the ignition has been on for more than say 5/10 secs then there is a problem that needs immediate investigation
But a beggared buzzer may just mean said beeper has a poor connection or earth or summat.
Or it is dying slowly!!

Temp or oil alarm sounder perhaps?

Is that noise your over heat/low oil pressure alarm, which should go off when engine has started ?
The cheapo buzzzer thing which makes the noise can die over time.It may be worth checking the lucar ? (or bullet)connectors down on your engine where the wiring loom meets the oil/temp sender unit. There are pattern items available if the sender itself has failed.
