Diesel leak

I am having trouble with a diesel leak on my generator. I have modified it so that the fuel is fed via an electric pump [max 110 litres per hour] directly to the injection pump & the leak appears to be at the pump end of the new feed tube. The engine uses at most 1.5 litres per hour & I wonder whether my problem is caused by the disparity between the capacity of pump & the demand of the engine. I have not been able to find a pump that supplies 5 litres or so an hour & wonder whether a pressure reducing valve, between the two pumps, might help.

If members of the panel have any suggestions, I should be much obliged.

Hopeful thanks,

John G

Pump capacities quoted are generally theoretical assuming no resistance to flow, but even with that taken into account your potential is way higher than the consumption, but bear in mind there will be the spill return, which will likely double the fuel flow rate.

If you dead head the pump (close down the discharge completely) and it is positive displacement something will have to give, but I would expect a spurt rather than a drip, so could just be a poor connection.

I use a Holley pump on my polishing rig and this just groans a bit when I close the discharge. I would have a look on eBay for a small pump for a typical car engine. Not too many if them burning 110 litres per hour. Otherwise fit a tee with a relief valve onto the spill return, you only need a few psi to supply the engine.
