Diesel Genny\'s at Makro

Hi,

Just picked up a 1.9kw diesel genny at Makro for £249 + Vat, cheapest I've seen anywhere. Diesels are a rarity anyway.
Comes complete with 240/110V Cform O/P sockets, circuit breakers, voltmeter
and 12V output. Comes on a mounting frame and has an 11 litre fuel tank
I intend to mount it between the two engines on the boat at the front of the engine room, and probably eventually box it in for sound reduction. I'll vent the exhaust eberspacher style to the outside, and provide it with a fuel feed from one of the main tanks. As it's air cooled, a turbo blower powered from it's own 12v
should suffice for cooling.
Also has a hole and mountings for a starter motor, so would not be hard to modify for electric start.
Terrific Value.
Thanks to Chrischevvy for spotting them in the first place.
Just thought I'd let you all know in case anybody else fancies one.

Steve.

Gonna put one of those turbo blowers on it, should do the job, or even two, one forcing air in the other in reverse pulling warm air out again.
I reckon it's very do-able.

Noise level? I could probably hide one in the lazaret, and there's a fuel supply from the port tank in place, but others put me off frame gennys on the grounds of cooling and noise insulation.

Dont really know anything about gennys but understand they are useful.

I presume they will be ok for stand alone on the bathing platform or on dockside.

will they have enough power to run the hairdryer for SWMBO?

Easily. We have an 850W 2-stroke petrol one from Makro (£50) for that, and we tested it with a neighbour's 800W microwave, and it's fine for that. I just fancy summat permanently plumbed in, and diesel.

So if its air cooled does it work ok with normal outsied air or does it need something else to cool it down

doh........so silly!!

Re: Diesel Genny\'s at Makro

If you box it in you will need a dedicated inlet and outlet ventilation hose for the cooling air - I did some work on Lister air cooled diesels some years ago and they need a LOT of air! I would do some experiments first on dry land boxing it in(with sound insulation) before finally fitting in your engine room. If you do experiment, make sure it is running with a near maximum loading - oh, and it will be noisy at the exhaust end of the hose......

With a boxed in set, remember that a surprising amount of air is going into the generator which exits via the exhaust, so your input air hose needs to be fairly large as not all going through it will directly aid cooling. Imagine some rubber mounts will be essential to reduce noise and vibration. Interesting though and very good value. Look forward to hearing how you get on.

Yes agreed, I intend to fit it with two turbo blowers, with 100 mm vent pipe, vented to the side of the boat, one for the air input, the other drawing warm air out so there is a constant air flow.
The engine is mounted onto the frame with rubber shocks.
I might be able to fit it in the frame, otherwise, I will make some new bearers to suit.
